UBC’s community members contribute to the success of the University in many ways. Whether it be through teaching, volunteer work and service, or research, UBC celebrates these achievements through awards and recognition programs throughout the year.

Staff Awards & Recognition

UBC’s staff are vital to the success of the University. Each year, UBC staff can be found contributing to the University through volunteering, acting as coaching mentors, creating new and better systems and processes, and more. Find out some of the ways in which staff contributions are recognized and celebrated.

President’s Service Award of Excellence

The President’s Service Award of Excellence recognizes staff for excellence in personal achievements and outstanding contributions to UBC.

UBC Vancouver President’s Staff Awards

The UBC Vancouver President’s Staff Awards recognizes the personal achievements and contributions of Vancouver campus staff to UBC and to the vision and goals of the University.

UBC Okanagan Staff Awards of Excellence

The UBC Okanagan Staff Awards of Excellence recognizes the achievements and contributions of staff at UBC’s Okanagan campus.

Alfred Scow Award

This award is granted to an undergraduate program or department that has contributed to student development, in honour of Alfred Scow’s commitment to UBC and his demonstrated vision, integrity and dedication to social justice.

Helen McCrae Award

This award is granted to recognize a service for students provided by the AMS, GSS or UBC, in honour of Helen McCrae’s commitment and contributions to community.

Margaret Fulton Award

This award is granted to an outstanding individual (student, faculty or staff) who has made a contribution to student development and the University community, in honour of Margaret Fulton’s commitment to university access and student learning.

Peter Larkin Award

This award is granted to a graduate program or department that has contributed to student development, in honour of Peter Larkin’s commitment and passion for teaching and graduate education.

Slonecker Award for Outstanding Volunteer Contribution to UBC

The Slonecker Award is presented annually at a reception during National Volunteer Week to a volunteer who has contributed outstanding leadership and service to UBC.

25-Year Club

Established to recognize staff with 25 years of uninterrupted or accumulated service. In 2004, the club began recognizing active staff who have reached the additional milestone of 35 years of service.


Faculty Awards & Recognition

With award-winning research projects and outstanding contributions from the field of medicine to the theatre, the work of our faculty is recognized globally through many of these significant awards.

Charles A. McDowell Award for Excellence in Research

The award will be made to an outstanding young (not more than 12 years after the year they received the PhD degree) member of the faculty of UBC who has demonstrated excellence in pure or applied scientific research.

Alfred Scow Award

This award is granted to an undergraduate program or department that has contributed to student development, in honour of Alfred Scow’s commitment to UBC and his demonstrated vision, integrity and dedication to social justice.

Helen McCrae Award

This award is granted to recognize a service for students provided by the AMS, GSS or UBC, in honour of Helen McCrae’s commitment and contributions to community.

Slonecker Award for Outstanding Volunteer Contribution to UBC

The Slonecker Award is presented annually at a reception during National Volunteer Week to a volunteer who has contributed outstanding leadership and service to UBC.

Dorothy Somerset Award for Performance Development in the Visual and Performing Arts

The award recognizes faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of Art, Music, Creative Writing, Theatre and Film.

Jacob Biely Faculty Research Prize

This prize is awarded annually to one of UBC’s outstanding faculty members for a distinguished record of published research by an active researcher.

Killam Faculty Research Fellowships

The Killam Faculty Research Fellowships are intended to support scholars engaged in research projects of broad significance. These awards are available for any field of study of research other than the ‘Arts’ as presently defined in the Canada Council Act.

Killam Research Prizes

Killam Research Prizes are awarded annually to top UBC researchers. Up to ten prizes in the amount of $5,000 each will be awarded to fulltime faculty members in recognition of outstanding research and scholarly contributions. All fields of research are included.

Killam Teaching Prizes

Killam Teaching Prizes are awarded annually, from the Killam Endowment Fund, to faculty nominated by students, colleagues, and alumni in recognition of excellence in teaching.

President’s Award for Public Education through Media

This award is given to the UBC faculty member who has most demonstrated outstanding service to the University and the community by sharing research expertise via the news media.

Quarter Century Club

Established to recognize full-time faculty members and librarians with 25 years of service. In 2003, the club began recognizing active members who have reached the additional milestone of 35 years of service.

Sam Black Award for Education and Development in the Visual and Performing Arts

This award recognizes faculty members who have made outstanding education and development contributions to the fields of Art, Music, Creative Writing, and Theatre and Film and outstanding accomplishment in scholarship in the fields of the Fine and Creative Arts.

UBC Okanagan Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovation

An award for UBC Okanagan faculty to acknowledge teaching innovation and excellence at the Okanagan campus.

Graduate TA Teaching Awards

In recognition of the valuable role that teaching assistants play in our undergraduate programs, the University annually awards teaching prizes to UBC Teaching Assistants.
