Catalyst #4:I am inspired by diverse leaders who live UBC’s values
Why this matters
Inspiring leaders make sure that faculty and staff feel included, valued, and have the resources to do their work.
With the university’s focus on inclusion, collaboration, and innovation to enhance UBC’s impact in an increasingly complex and interconnected world, leaders need to be flexible, continuous and lifelong learners, and recognize and work across differences in values and assumptions. They also need to be collaborative and adaptive in their leadership styles.[i]
By modeling their words with their actions, living UBC’s values, and supporting faculty and staff to realize their potential, leaders can have a profound influence on our collective ability to realize the ambitions identified in the UBC strategic plan.
What the numbers said
In the 2017 UBC Workplace Experiences Survey, 37% of faculty and staff feel the “lack of manager/unit head’s help and support” is a barrier to achieving their career aspirations.
59% of faculty and staff say “UBC’s senior leadership communicate a compelling vision for UBC” – that’s 13% higher than in 2014.
UBC’s Leadership Development Initiative
UBC has articulated a leadership framework with six competencies – and related behaviour statements – that all leaders can work toward.
BC’s Top Employer in 2023
This designation recognizes the British Columbian employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work and the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.
Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence
In June 2020, President Ono reaffirmed our institutional commitment to inclusion and called for the acceleration and intensification of our efforts to build a more inclusive campus.
